The Challenge Curators are our primary advisors in shaping and articulating the Hack Belgium core societal Challenges, which will act as a springboard for our participants’ ideas. During the event you’ll serve as the lead expert within your Challenge, keeping a helicopter view of the ideas generated and providing guidance to participants and teams.

3 Days at Hack Belgium (26th, 27th, 28th April 2018)

  • Take part in 3 x 60 min Challenge Workshops - idea generating & idea feedback sessions addressing challenge topics. Keep track of the ideas and teams emerging in these workshops

  • Run a 2h long Challenge Roundup at the end of Day 1, to help teams form and finalise their ideas 

  • Mentor the hacking teams working in your Challenge domain and help connect participants with relevant experts over Days 2 and Day 3

  • Moderate the Pitch Session within your Challenge (up to 3h depending on number of teams) on Day 3

Your Role

The Technology Experience Zone will be located in the center of the venue and offers Hack Belgium participants an opportunity to see technologies in action and where possible experience or play with technologies too. The goal is to inspire participants and help them explore how technologies can be applied in their ideas and projects.  Each technology exhibitor will be provided with sufficient space, tables and power to create a demo area.  You will be expected to exhibit in the Experience Zone for at least Day 1 and Day 2; Staying until the afternoon of Day 3 is optional but highly appreciated.

The Support Workshops are consultative sessions that allow teams at Hack Belgium working on a specific idea to learn crucial design, business and technological models, parameters or specifications and immediately apply these to their idea.     Hack Belgium is looking for entrepreneurs and storytellers who can help Hack Belgium teams perfect their final pitch on Day 3 of the festival.  During the morning of day 3, in a series of 20 minute sessions, all teams will be given an opportunity do a practice presentation in front of a panel of pitch coaches.  Your role is to provide constructive feedback on how to improve their presentation.

    About 4 hours on the morning of Day 3 (28th April, 2018)

    • Meet with each team to listen to and help finalise their pitches
    • Provide meaningful and actionable feedback for the teams

    Your Role

    Hack Belgium is looking for visual art that complements the themes depicted in the 12 challenges facing Belgium and the 10 technologies featured in Hack Belgium’s Experience Zone. Artists are invited to submit original work that explores the core topics in ways that addresses society’s concerns  but could also do it with a bit of fun or by creating an immersive experience. Accepted forms of media are: painting, sculpture, photography, sound art, computer visualization, design, furniture, games, projections, etc. 

    Artists focusing on sustainability issues or sustainable use of materials are highly encouraged to apply.  


    Interpret one of our 12 Challenges or 10 Technologies

    The work chosen to represent the challenges will be exhibited either in or around the different corresponding Challenge Huddles. Each huddle is 10m x 8m. The Technology-themed installations will be exhibited in or near the Experience Zone. There is also the opportunity to project one of the buildings of Tour & Taxis if the project is appropriate.     Materials provided:

    Physical Space & Hanging Materials

    • Depending on the subject matter or materials, we will allocate space:  in one of the 10m x 8m huddles; in an open area of the main halls; or permission to roam around if it’s a performance or interactive piece.

    • Some construction by the Hack Belgium event staff may be available but this varies depending on the project submitted.

    A/V Support:

    • If necessary, you’ll be provided with multiple 55” screen, cables, mic(s) and Wifi.

    Writing & Drawing Material:

    • Markers, large sheets of paper and Post-It notes can be provided. If you need other materials such as tape or flipchart paper, please let us know in the form below.


    What We Offer

    Both before and at Hack Belgium, you will be supported at all times by the Hack Belgium Content Team and the Experience Design Team, to make sure that your time is spent as efficiently and effectively as possible.

    Given your influential role both before and at Hack Belgium, you will be networking with top experts and decision makers across Belgium’s innovation ecosystem. We will also introduce our Experts in communication with key stakeholders.

    You will be featured prominently as a Hack Belgium Expert on the Hack Belgium website, the Hack Belgium Facebook Page and Closed Group, and during the event on the Hack Belgium event app.

    All ticket fees, catering, and parking will be covered.


    Submissions Process

    Submissions for Challenge Curators are currently being accepted and will be approved on a rolling basis until: March 15th, 2018 at 11:59pm

    What Happens After Submitting

    We will be releasing the names of selected experts to the public in three rounds throughout January – March 2018. If we think you’re a good match we’ll be in touch to discuss your submission.
